SOUTH CONGAREE, S.C. (WIS) -Non-profit organizations in South Congaree are speaking out against a town ordinance that requires a $350 fee to host special events on public property.
The ordinance, approved by the South Congaree Town Council in June 2024, mandates that groups obtain a special event license to hold gatherings on public property. A special council meeting was held Tuesday evening to discuss potential revisions to the measure.
Local non-profits say the fee places an unfair burden on organizations that provide free services and events to the community.
“Nobody gets paid — not one red penny. Everything’s done for free,” said Jimmy Williams, who helps put on “Jesus is his Name” every winter.
