LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Chagas disease is on the rise in the U.S.
In eight states, there are human cases reported of the disease, with Arkansas being one of them.
"Sounds really freaky. Not a good situation. Not a bug I wish to encounter,” one Arkansan said.
The kissing bug often bites people on the face -- and then passes on the parasite in their droppings.
People infected may experience symptoms like vomiting or headaches. The CDC reports 20% to 30% of those infected develop serious heart problems.
Pet owners should also be aware. Humans aren't the only ones who can be infected. Dogs can too if they eat the bug.
