DUBLIN, Ga. — A judge declared a mistrial Tuesday in the murder case against Ben Whitaker, a Laurens County nurse accused of killing his wife less than two months after their wedding, after jurors said they were deadlocked.
After nearly two weeks of testimony from prosecution and defense attorneys, the jury told Judge Jon Helton they could not reach a unanimous decision on whether Whitaker was guilty in the death of his wife, Tiffani Scarborough.
The jury began deliberations Monday afternoon and continued through Tuesday, but remained unable to agree on a verdict. At noon Tuesday, jurors informed the court they were deadlocked in an 11-to-1 vote, though Helton said he did not know whether the majority favored conviction or acquittal.
