Australian travelers are currently experiencing no flight cancellations or significant disruptions despite recent deadly attacks in Doha, Qatar. Major airlines, including Emirates, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, and Air France, are actively avoiding airspace over Iraq, Iran, and Israel while closely monitoring the situation.
Doha's Hamad International Airport, a key connecting hub for Australian travelers, remains operational. Virgin Australia’s newly launched flights to Doha, in partnership with Qatar Airways, have not been impacted. These services from Sydney and Brisbane to Doha began in June.
Qatar Airways, the only airline providing direct flights from Australia to Doha, confirmed that its operations continue without disruption. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the airline emphasized, "The recent unfortunate events in Doha have not impacted Qatar Airways operations and there have been no disruptions as a result. The safety and security of our passengers have been and will always be our top priority."
Qantas does not operate flights to Doha. Aviation expert Justin Wastnage, an adjunct industry fellow at Griffith University's Institute of Tourism, noted that the strikes in Qatar were specifically aimed at Hamas locations and did not directly affect commercial flights. "That strike by Israel on Qatar was very targeted, very pinpoint accuracy. They hit residential buildings where they believed Hamas leadership were located," Wastnage explained.
He added that while it is generally safe to fly, some travelers may feel anxious. "All of the airlines take extra precautions to avoid any areas that could be affected," he said. Wastnage also referenced the downing of a civilian aircraft over Ukraine, highlighting that airlines are aware of potential risks and are adjusting their flight paths accordingly.
Dean Long, chief executive of the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA), reassured travelers that flights are proceeding as scheduled. "We're in a really good place and we aren't seeing any major delays. Qatar is the only airline flying directly from Australia to Doha, and Virgin hasn't cancelled any flights either," Long stated.
He further emphasized that if any disruptions occur, travelers will receive support from airlines and travel agents, stating, "there's no need to panic or cancel flights." Long reiterated that the aviation industry prioritizes safety and is committed to supporting affected travelers.
