A North Texas state trooper battling brain cancer is getting an unexpected lift from his community.
Oscar Loya has faced setback after setback, thousands of dollars in medical bills, and just last week, a broken-down car.
But people from across the state have come together to make sure he’s not fighting alone.
A father, Marine veteran and state trooper, those were the titles Loya always saw himself using, certainly never “patient.”
“I went for a yearly eye exam, and they did their tests, took pictures of my eyes,” said Loya.
A routine test last summer for the Rockwall County resident led to a call from his doctor.
“I went in, he told me to sit down,” said Loya. “And then he told me, ‘Hey, you have a brain tumor.’”
