A more thorough ground investigation is to be carried out in the coming weeks to establish what repairs can be made to a sinkhole which appeared at Eston Rec, a council says.

The hole appeared at the end of last year on the green space, which is bounded by Normanby Road, the Trunk Road and Church Lane. Estimated to be 12ft deep, local grandmother Carol Carne had to be helped from it by a passer-by after falling in while walking her dog. Redcar and Cleveland Council put up temporary barriers around the incursion in order to protect the public, warning them to stay away. These were subsequently replaced by permanent metal fencing.
