A former MP has said he is "absolutely appalled" at protests against the temporary housing of asylum seekers in a Falkirk hotel .
Dennis Canavan , who represented the town for 33 years at both Westminster and Holyrood, today appealed to local residents to remember the "humanitarian" motto on Falkirk's historic coat of arms - “touch ane, touch a'".
He told the Record: "I always found the overwhelming majority of my former constituents to be the salt of the earth - respecting and welcoming people whatever their ethnicity."
It comes after four people were arrested at a third demonstration outside the Cladhan Hotel last weekend. The venue in Falkirk town centre has become the focus of heated exchanges between those who are for and against the continued housing of
