A corrupt police calls handler who stole confidential information about an investigation into his drug dealer friend has been sent to prison for six months. ‌

Gary Moran was also sacked from his post and blasted by force chiefs after using the Police Scotland computer system to tip-off his criminal associate. ‌

Dundee Sheriff Court was told that Moran spent three years abusing the force's computer network to access sensitive information to pass on. ‌

Sheriff Alistair Carmichael said: "These were serious offences - not just technical aberrations on your part. You passed information to a friend who was under investigation by police.

"This was a gross breach of confidence and you were acting against the public interest. There is no reasonable alternative to a custodial sentence
