Tamworth mayor Russell Webb says he has "no doubt" there are some people sharing their eternal resting place with their pets.
The topic of pet burials was one of the agenda items at Tuesday night's ordinary council meeting.
It comes as recently-introduced amendments to NSW Legislation make it permissible for companion animals to be interred with their owners.
In light of the changes council has written to Cemeteries and Crematoria NSW seeking clarification and advice around some of the specifics, such as what animals would be allowed, health and safety considerations for staff, and how animal burials would be recorded.
