Met Office issues Storm Amy update as heavy rain and strong winds set to batter UK this weekend
As the UK continues to be hit by heavy rain and gusty winds, signalling the end of the British summer, the Met Office has given its verdict on whether we could see the first named storm of the year this weekend.
Back in June, the UK weather service invited the public to suggest names for the 2025 to 2026 storm season. The call-out resulted in thousands of submissions, with people suggesting names of their pets, loved ones, or favourite film and TV characters.
The first name on this year's list has been unveiled as Amy - the most frequently suggested female name.
