For almost 24 hours, eight-month-old Dexter Wilton was left in a filthy room as his carers took drugs.

He had been dead for hours when paramedics found him inside a property west of Brisbane.

More than six years later, Andrew William Campbell was jailed over the "abhorrent" breach of duty.

Campbell, 45, had been with Dexter's mother Natalie Jade Whitehead for four weeks and moved into her Ipswich unit, taking on a parenting role.

The de-facto couple were "overtaken by a cocktail of drugs" and were on an ice bender when they left Dexter unattended with a single bottle in his cot for at least 21 hours on June 2019.

"The facts are tragic and utterly heartbreaking," Justice Catherine Muir told Campbell in Brisbane Supreme Court on Wednesday.
