BEAUFORT — Speaking during the public comment portions of meetings is what Hilton Head resident Skip Hoagland does. A familiar face to Beaufort County Council and other municipalities, his confrontational attitude has sometimes gotten him into trouble.
On Aug. 19, a Bluffton municipal judge sentenced Hoagland to a 15-day stint in jail for trespassing, following a January incident at a Beaufort County Republican Party meeting.
Hoagland was released three days later, for reasons that aren’t altogether clear. His short stay did, however, ignite a controversy involving a County Council member who allegedly visited Hoagland while he was locked up. A photo of the councilmember with Hoagland in his cell was reportedly circulated after the visit, eventually reaching the attention of County C
