South Carolina has a really big problem coming down the road … and it’s, uh, our roads .

As The Post and Courier’s Nick Reynolds reports, the state faces a massive backlog of road maintenance and bridge replacements, not to mention the incessant need for more lane miles with settlers from around the country wagon-training in here.

Which is no surprise to anyone who drives, say, Highway 17, 17A, 41, 61, Rivers Avenue or Dorchester or Folly Road, to name a few.

So, what’s the Legislature’s bright idea to remedy this? Well, some lawmakers want to take some of those roads off the Department of Transportation’s hands and give them to the counties.
