It was a long-distance save by Region of Waterloo paramedics.

After a fire destroyed an ambulance and fire truck in Baker Lake, Nunavut — about 3,000 kilometres away — paramedic services breathed new life into the Kivalliq-region hamlet by donating a decommissioned regional ambulance, courtesy of Ambulances4NU.

Baker Lake is the fourth-largest community in Nunavut with 2,061 residents, per the last census, and is the only inland community in the territory.

The connection between the region and Ambulances4NU runs deep, as it was founded by John Prno, the former longtime chief of paramedics in Waterloo Region.

The ambulance will be Baker Lake’s main stretcher service unit, helping residents get to their nearest health centre or travel to larger hospitals when needed.
