Saskatchewan RCMP’s Underwater Recover Team (URT) is sharing vehicle submersion survival tips. With over 100,000 bodies of water across the province, drivers should be aware of what to do if they find themselves in a sinking or submerged vehicle.

The measures to take in this scenario are simple, as the RCMP urge drivers not to panic, and follow the life-saving acronym “SWOC”, named by leading cold water and drowning physiologist, and professor emeritus from the University of Manitoba, Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht.

S – Seatbelts off

W- Windows open

O- Out immediately

C- Children first

In the event of an emergency, call 9-1-1 after exiting the vehicle.

Corporal Jamie Diemert, Saskatchewan RCMP URT Coordinator explains why they want everyone to be prepared if they are found in this scenario.
