An effort by the Alberta provincial government to restrict certain books at school libraries is continuing to play out.
The story began in late May, when the Alberta provincial government announced it would set up “guardrails” to restrict books containing explicit materials.
The education minister raised concerns because of the content in four coming-of-age graphic novels, dealing with LGBTQ+ themes.
The Edmonton Public School Board later released a list of 200 books it planned to remove, in order to comply with this decision. This list was long enough to attract attention, and some of the titles included are popular fiction and some literary classics.
