Pheasant numbers in North Dakota are down 3% from last year, according to the Game and Fish Department’s annual roadside survey conducted in July and August. Despite the dip, the population remains 48% above the 10-year average. Sharp-tailed grouse numbers dropped 38%, placing them 30% below the 10-year average, while partridges declined 26%. Officials say severe summer weather contributed to the drop in grouse and partridge populations. Grouse and partridge seasons open Sept. 13, and pheasant season begins Oct. 11. All three seasons close Jan. 4.
