To the editor,

On Sept. 3, the Herald ran an article titled, “Casino plans dead for now.” The headline should have read “Casino plans dead,” because there is no grassroots support for a gambling casino in Grand Forks. Yet earlier this year every state and local official in the area was in favor of such a casino. Why?

A confluence of guilt and greed overrode reason and the commonwealth among our leadership. For the liberal left and center, the issue was not really the casino but the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. We owe them this. On the right were those hypnotized by dollar signs. Development uber alles, never mind that the economic benefits of legalized gambling have been greatly exaggerated.

The main issue is not ethnicity or economics but quality of life. Consider Atlantic City:
