A New Jersey man received a 12- to 14-year prison sentence Monday for raping a 14-year-old relative in Hyannis in 2021, officials said.
Cheldon Clare, 46, of Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., was sentenced in Barnstable Superior Court, where he was convicted last week of rape of a child aggravated by a 10-year age difference and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a person aged 14 or older, according to authorities and legal filings.
Clare’s lawyer, Ellen J. Garnett, said he “denies the allegations and he intends to appeal.”
The girl and her mother reported the crime to police in Barnstable on Sept. 6, 2021, the Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert J. Galibois ’s office said.
