Teachers could be on picket lines as early as Monday if a general strike is called.

The union representing more than 40,000 Alberta public school teachers has announced a notice to strike.

The announcement comes after talks between the Alberta Teachers Association and the provincial government’s Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association broke down again last week.

Alberta Teachers’ Association president Jason Schilling is set to hold a press conference in Edmonton at 11 a.m. regarding the notice.

Under provincial law, the ATA must provide 72 hour notice before any job action. That means teachers could be on picket lines as early as Monday if a general strike is called.
