Right-wing activist and Chicago-area native Charlie Kirk was shot while presenting at Utah Valley University Wednesday, officials said.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the university said Kirk was about 20 minutes into a presentation when shots were fired from a nearby building. It was not immediately clear if Kirk was struck by the gunfire, but Ellen Treanor, the associate vice president of strategic and communication management, said Kirk was believed to have been "hit" and was "taken with his security team away from the premises."

The courtyard where the event was being held was ultimately cleared, Treanor said.
