Washington: Conservative political activist Charlie Kirk , a prominent MAGA campaigner and fundraiser for US President Donald Trump, has been assassinated while speaking at a university in Utah.

A person of interest who had been detained over the shooting was subsequently released, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed in a social media post. The update came hours after Patel posted about the arrest on X: “The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody.”

In his later post, Patel said the subject “has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement”.

“Our investigation continues, and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency.”
