PHOENIX — Arizona leaders say they're horrified and disgusted to learn a shooting in Utah has killed political activist Charlie Kirk, who has had a presence in the Grand Canyon State for many years.

Gov. Katie Hobbs said she was "horrified" by the violent attack reported Wednesday at a speaking event at Utah Valley University.

"This tragedy is not about who Charlie Kirk supported politically. It is about the devastating loss of a father, a neighbor, and an Arizonan who called this state home, and whose life was cut short by senseless violence," Hobbs said in a statement.

Maricopa County Sheriff Jerry Sheridan acknowledged how Kirk was "one of our own" as a resident of Maricopa County.
