(WNDU) - Imagine attempting to renew your registration only to find out you can’t because of an unpaid toll.

A new bill in Michigan could make that a reality, according to our affiliate WNEM .

The bill will allow the secretary of state to block drivers from renewing their license plates if they owe toll money to the Ambassador Bridge — the privately owned link connecting Detroit to Canada.

Supporters say it’s about accountability, but opponents argue it puts the government in the role of debt collector for private companies.
