The deaths of two women trying to help an injured kangaroo on a busy Melbourne freeway have led to renewed calls for mandatory reporting requirements for wildlife collisions.

Victorian laws obliging motorists to stop, assist and report animal injuries or deaths only apply to animals that are legally considered property.

Wildlife Victoria chief executive Lisa Palma said if a driver hit a domestic pet or livestock, such as sheep or cattle, they were legally required to stop, report it, and seek help for the animal.

"We would like to see the legislation changed where the same applies for wildlife,"

she said.

Wildlife Victoria is the state's lead agency responsible for responding to reports of injured wildlife.
