LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Ingham County Health Department officials are ratcheting up medical outreach and prevention activities after identifying a “trend” of new HIV cases among people who have a history of injecting drugs.
“I will say that we noticed the trend,” Shoyinka tells 6 News. “We had, you know, this number of new cases that were identified and we recognized that. And in four of those cases, all of them had a history of IV drug use or or identified as IV drug use being the main factor of acquisition.”
That triggered the department to send notices to medical providers throughout Ingham County through the Michigan Health Alert Network. That’s a state system that connects providers and public health officials electronically allowing health officials to notify health care providers
