PEORIA COUNTY ( 25News Now ) - Central Illinois farmers face a different threat this harvest season: fire.
With abnormally dry weather in the region, farmers are taking precautions to protect their fields and equipment. Brimfield Farmer Rob Asbell said the most common cause of fast-moving field fires comes from combines.
The combine bearings or parts can overheat and catch fire while they are in operation.
“A loss like that is a quarter-million to a million-dollar machine. It’s not easy to replace that,” he said.
Asbell said farmers should have routine checkups on their equipment to make sure they are in good shape.
