A few stray sprinkles managed to find their way into far Southwest Missouri yesterday evening, but amounts had no impact on the expanding drought. Rain is not expected anytime soon as a summer ridge of high pressure begins to dominate the region this week.
Mostly sunny and hot conditions will return this afternoon after a 20-day hiatus. Afternoon sunshine and relatively dry air (and ground) will boost temperatures into the low 90s. The last 90° day in Springfield was on August 22.
This is just the beginning of an extended stretch of September heat. A heat dome is setting up over the region and will persist through the weekend into next week. This will keep temperatures high and rain chances near zero.
