PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Thursday marks 24 years since thousands of people were killed in a terrorist attack on September 11. Many across the Valley are paying tribute to those who lost their lives that fateful day.

On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four planes, crashing two into the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers in New York City. Another plane crashed into the Pentagon, and the fourth went down in an open field in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives, including airline passengers and crew, civilians, law enforcement officers and military personnel.

Gov. Katie Hobbs ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, in honor of the victims.
