BUFFALO, N.Y. — Inside the Bud Bakewell Arena at Riverside Park, inspiration glides across the ice in the form of a truly special group of athletes. These spirited individuals are part of SABAH —Spirited Athletes Bold at Heart—a local organization providing adaptive recreational and sports opportunities to individuals with physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges.
But on this particular day, the ice was shared with a guest who’s made waves well beyond Western New York: Rear Admiral Robert Wirth of the United States Navy .
Wirth, a Grand Island native and proud Buffalo sports fan, is back in his hometown with his wife, Stacy, for a special visit. The high school sweethearts met at Grand Island High School and have been together since 1988—“almost 37 years of dating,” as Wirth joke
