CARIBOU, Maine (WAGM & WABI) - The results are in for the RSU 39 budget referendum vote, and after months of uncertainty, a decision has finally been made.
It took three separate attempts, but the latest budget proposal for RSU 39 officially passed—though by a thin margin. According to the final tally, 438 Caribou and Stockholm voters supported the budget, 392 voted against it, and 2 ballots were voided.
The original $24.95 million plan was overwhelmingly rejected by voters on June 10 with 146 votes in favor and 443 opposed. In response, the school board trimmed $60,000 from the proposal, reducing the projected tax impact from $284,000 to $227,143. Despite the adjustment, the revised budget was voted down again on July 8, votes totaling 262 to 449.
RSU 39 will now move forward wit
