HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - On this date in 2001, both the Charleston Yeager Airport and the Huntington Tri-State Airport closed to all traffic in the aftermath of the terror attacks in Washington and New York.
It was part of the nationwide ground stop on all flights.
It quickly affected so many aspects of life here, even though we were far from the attacks.
For instance, the Charleston, Huntington, and Ashland Malls all closed early that day as people began to grasp the severity of what had happened.
Two local people also died in the attacks.
Mary Lou Hague was from Parkersburg and died in the World Trade Center.
Dr. Paul Ambrose was from Huntington and died on the plane that crashed into The Pentagon.
