BELLEVUE, Neb. (WOWT) - One of the darkest days in U.S. history led to an emergency visit from the sitting president.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush was attending a children’s school in Florida when two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York.

President Bush was quickly escorted away and put on Air Force One for his own safety.

After several hours in the air, Air Force One landed at Offutt AFB where the president was secured in an underground bunker while he monitored the situation.

Later that night, President Bush returned to Washington to address the nation about the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil in history.
