Thomas Morstead still remembers walking off the field that January afternoon in 2021.

The Superdome was mostly empty, which was the norm that season due to the COVID pandemic.

The game, a playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was Drew Brees’ final game in a Saints uniform.

And as far as Morstead knew, it may have been his last game in a Saints uniform, too.

“I didn’t know what was going to happen with me,” Morstead said. “I had a down year that year.”

Two months later, the Saints released Morstead . It was a decision that surprised many Saints fans in the same way Morstead's onside kick in Super Bowl XLIV surprised the Indianapolis Colts. Morstead had become a fan favorite in his 12 years with the Saints, reaching a level of adoration that punters rarely attain.
