WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Nearly 3,000 people were killed in an organized attack by al-Qaeda, a designated terrorist group, on Sept. 11, 2001.

Key political sites in the U.S. were targeted in the 9/11 attack, including one in Arlington, Va. and another in Washington, D.C.

In New York, two planes struck the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center in a crash that was heard around the world. Many people can still recall exactly where they were at 8:46 a.m. as the upper floors of North Tower was struck by a hijacked plane. Seventeen minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., the South Tower was also struck.

Four commercial planes were hijacked in a coordinated effort by 19 al-Qaeda members.
