FORT ERIE – On a beautiful Southern Ontario evening at the border oval, another year was added to the Canadian Triple Crown drought.
At the eighth pole, it looked like King's Plate winner Mansetti was going to be only the second horse to sweep the first two legs since Wando's Triple Crown year of 2003.
But Stronach Stables' gutsy gelding Runaway Again made a late charge down the middle of the track to win the 90th Prince of Wales at Fort Erie Race Track before a big crowd across the Peace Bridge from downtown Buff alo.
It was the second consecutive win for Stronach Stables, headed by longtime horseman Frank Stronach, and the first Prince of Wales for conditioner Sid Attard and jockey Ryan Munger.
The gelded son of Hard Spun finished the 1 3/16-mile trek over the Fort Erie dirt in 1:55.
