It’s recognition that “came out of the blue,” said Suncor president Rich Kruger.

“It came as quite a surprise and obviously it’s a big honour.”

Kruger, who’s worked in the energy industry for decades, is one of two Calgarians who will receive awards on Thursday from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce — in the oilman’s case, tagged as business leader of the year.

He’ll be honoured alongside Jay Westman, chair and CEO of longtime residential developer Jayman BUILT, who’s garnered a lifetime achievement award.
