(Gray News) - President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will posthumously award Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Trump made the announcement at a service at the Pentagon commemorating the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Trump said he remained shocked by the horror of Kirk’s assassination during an appearance at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

Trump also praised Kirk’s impact on conservative politics.

“Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people,” Trump said.

Authorities said Thursday that the shooter who assassinated Kirk has not been identified, but they believe he jumped off a roof and fled into a neighborhood after firing a single shot.
