This Day in History: United States suffers coordinated suicide attacks on Sept. 11, 2001

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The date 9/11 is one of the most infamous in American history.

On Sept. 11, 2001, the United States suffered four coordinated suicide attacks. 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners.

Two planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Passengers on the fourth plane revolted and caused it to crash into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The attacks led to a multi-decade-long global war on terrorism.
