PORTLAND, Ore. — There's several events in the Portland metro area Thursday to mark the 24 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and honor the victims.

In total, 2,996 people were killed after al-Qaida hijackers crashed airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon; a third plane crashed into a Pennsylvania field. Among them, 1,100 victims remain unidentified.

All flags across Oregon are lowered to half-staff on Thursday to honor the victims killed. Gov. Tina Kotek announced that all flags at Oregon public institutions will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in remembrance of the first responders and civilians who died in the attacks.
