LONG BEACH, Miss. (WLOX) - On Wednesday, The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Gulf Park Campus added a new two-year secondary education program for students looking to teach middle or high school.

Students have to complete an associate degree or at least 60 credit hours before enrolling.

The program’s coordinator Jay Howell says students can choose to specialize in one of six subjects. Those include English, biology, chemistry, math, physics or social studies.

“The final year is a residency year, so they’ll actually spend a full year with a partner school district learning in their district... practicing, teaching, working with a mentor [or] teacher so when they’re done, they’re gonna be very, very skilled in the classroom,” Howell said.
