MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis group of volunteers spent the day at Memphis National Cemetery keeping the memory of some of the country's greatest heroes alive.
On September 11, 2001 the nation stood still and 24 years later it's a day many will never forget.
"I was still active duty," Thomas Maynard reflected. "I actually saw the second plane fly through the tower live."
The events that day are embedded in U.S. history as the nation's deadliest terrorist attack.
While the vivid images replay in the minds of millions, Maynard, who is Director of the Memphis National Cemetery, vividly remembers the moments after the life-changing tragedy.
"It unified the country, and it's important that we continue to work together and stay unified as a country moving forward," he said.
