MILWAUKEE (WMTV) - A small plane with three people aboard crashed Thursday into Lake Michigan, near Racine, a Milwaukee airport spokesperson confirmed.

A Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport spokesperson stated a Cirrus SR22 aircraft took off shortly after 12:15 p.m. to head to Michigan, and had a problem during the flight.

The plane crashed into the lake just after 12:35 p.m., about 20 miles east of Bender Park.

The U.S. Coast Guard is the lead agency responding, along with other rescue and dive teams.

According to TMJ4, all three people were wearing life jackets and are not hurt. Officials rescued the trio and took them back to the Milwaukee Coast Guard station.

The airport spokesperson said the nature of the emergency is not yet known. It is unclear what caused the crash.
