Here in southeastern Michigan, we have just about enough time for a fall crop of leaf lettuce. About four weeks from the average first frost of autumn is a good approximation of the last chance to plant and harvest a crop directly seeded into the garden.

Leaf lettuce grown and harvested in the fall is much more flavorful and does not have the bitterness that spring lettuce sometimes has. This is due to the cooler fall growing temperatures during its last stages of development. You may find you hardly need salad dressing for fall- harvested lettuce.
