MASON CITY, Iowa — Mason City's ongoing battle with the Emerald Ash Borer has led to the removal of nearly 3,700 out of approximately 4,500 Ash trees from city boulevards.

The city says it employs two full-time tree crews for this task, with one focusing on neighborhoods and the other targeting the most critical trees citywide.

In addition to the boulevard efforts, 60 out of 142 Ash trees have been removed from the city cemetery, and 97 out of 156 from the city golf course. Across all city parks, 195 of the 475 Ash trees have been removed. Furthermore, 156 Ash trees have been cleared from the city’s alleyways, flood buyout properties, and walking trails.

The city says the removal process prioritizes Ash trees near power lines in boulevards and parks, necessitating temporary road closure
