MUSKEGON, Mich. — Cole’s Quality Foods is shutting down its Muskegon facility, effective immediately, according to the city of Muskegon.

The company, best known for its frozen garlic bread, has been part of the community for more than 80 years.

Cole’s was founded in Muskegon in 1943, and employee Daniel Berghuis said he’s shocked and devastated.

“I dedicated my life there,” said Berghuis.

Berghuis showed up for work at Cole’s Quality Foods on Wednesday morning only to learn two hours later, he no longer had a job.

“I was at work since nine o'clock this morning. They came in at 11 o'clock, said they closed the doors. Send everybody home. No notice, nothing,” said Berghuis.

Cole’s confirmed with the City of Muskegon on Wednesday that production has stopped at its Lakeshore Drive
