Military members, first responders, and local leaders gathered Thursday at the Huntsville Fire Department to pause and remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001. It was a quiet, heartfelt ceremony as folks gathered to remember the lives lost, the heroes who gave everything, and the families affected by 9/11.

At exactly 7:46 a.m. Thursday morning, sirens sounded, marking the moment the first plane hit the World Trade Center. Huntsville Fire Chief Howard McFarlen says it’s a tradition to sound the sirens at that exact time, saying, “You had all types of emergency vehicles rushing to the scene, and that would have been the sound heard all over the city, so we’re bringing that back.”
