BOSTON (WPRI) — Massachusetts State Police are responding to the University of Massachusetts Boston on Thursday for an "unconfirmed report" of a shooting on campus.
School officials first said a "police incident" happened near the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The alert was then updated to a "safety threat" near a residence hall in UMass' East Building, followed by another alert 15 minutes later about a "police incident in/near Campus Center."
Students are being asked to avoid the area. Shortly before 5 p.m. ET, UMass confirmed classes and activities for Thursday night have been canceled, noting a police investigation was "ongoing."
