JASPER, Ind. (WEVV) — A man is facing criminal charges in Dubois County after police say he tried to force his way into a woman's apartment on Thursday.

Around noon Thursday, Jasper Police say they responded to a 911 call from a woman living at the Dewey Street Lofts about a man trying to force his way into her apartment.

Officers identified the suspect as Matthew Lee Hess, a 31-year-old homeless man.

Through their investigation, police say they determined Hess had been striking and kicking the victim's apartment door for nearly an hour, causing significant damage and nearly gaining entry.

Officers say they found Hess on the property of Dewey Street Lofts a short time later, where he was taken into custody.
