CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A growing memorial is taking shape on the platform where 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska was killed in an unprovoked stabbing on Charlotte’s Blue Line in August.

Flowers, candles, and handwritten notes now cover an area of the East-West Boulevard station stop in South End. One note reads: “We failed you Iryna. Rest in peace.”

For neighbors, it’s a painful reminder of her loss.

“Seeing the flowers and the photos, it is beautiful… but somewhat haunting at the same time,” South End resident Liam Ellis said. “Seeing someone who was trying to make the best of their life now just as a photo, no longer here.”

Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee, was remembered as kind and sweet. She worked full-time at a local pizza shop while taking college classes to improve her English. She dreamed
